A scholarship program established by Benjy Grinberg awards two winners, both students receiving a $1,000 financial assistance by the semester of fall 2021.

Los Angeles, California – May 26, 2021 – Benjy Grinberg Scholarship gives away two scholarship grants for deserving college students pursuing a higher degree in the United States. The first winner is Evan Cunningham, who is an incoming freshman in Marietta College, while the second winner is Shawana Yodice, an associate’s degree holder who will be continuing her education in Rowan University.

Benjy Grinberg is an established figure in the music industry. As the Founder and President of Rostrum Records, Benjy founded his passion in music at an early age, and worked his way toward building a career out of it. However, he understands that many college students are pursuing their passion, but not everyone has the financial means to complete their degree. Even with efforts to find part-time jobs or live a frugal lifestyle, a lot of students are struggling to continue paying their tuition fees.

This is what inspired Benjy to start his own annual scholarship program. Called the Benjy Grinberg Scholarship, this program aims to ease the financial challenges that many college students face in completing their degree.

For the year 2020-2021, the Benjy decided to give financial assistance to two winners:

  • Evan Cunningham, incoming freshman pursuing Music Therapy at Marietta College, Ohio
  • Shawana Yodice, incoming freshman pursuing Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rowan University, New Jersey

The two students as well as the rest of the applicants answered an essay question on the following topic: “What is a passion or hobby of yours, and what role does it play in your educational journey?”

Evan, being an incoming Music Therapy student, explained that his passion for music propelled him to engage in community service and bringing healing for others.

“My passion for music is the foundation for hours of community service as well as a potential career path, and will set me apart as I plan to make the world a better place as a music therapist and performer,” he remarked.

Evan also mentioned how music can bring people together in a world of conflict.

“I realized how music can be healing, and began looking into ways to use my passion in a career that would help others. Music therapy and singing/songwriting stood out as the perfect fit. With the turmoil our world is experiencing, a well-written song can bring joy, comfort and hope when needed most,” he added.

The second winner, Shawana, explained that her passion for playing the clarinet developed her self-confidence.

“Before I played clarinet, I did not have much confidence in myself and was very shy. I did not feel comfortable talking to other kids and would rather stick to myself and avoid others. When I began playing clarinet, it gave me a feeling I never experienced before. I felt like it gave me the opportunity to express myself in a way I never could before,” she mentioned.

Shawana also explained how music opened many doors for her to participate in honor bands and solo concerts. She also expressed how music also helped her develop other important academic skills.

“Music has opened up a door for me that is continuously bringing me opportunities many other people will never get to experience. Music has helped me in English tremendously since in ways they are very similar. When playing music, a big part of being successful is learning how to interpret the emotion and meaning of the notes which are just like the words of a story,” she remarked.

Benjy Grinberg Scholarship is an academic financial assistance program aimed to help students pay for expenses as they pursue a higher education degree. It is open to all current college students and incoming freshmen studying in the United States.
