Quebecers rushing to open ecommerce sites during pandemic

Montreal, QC – September 22, 2020 – Quebecers have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. Not only has the province experienced a tragically high number of COVID-19 cases, but the effects of the pandemic have led to an unprecedented 17% unemployment rate in the province. With CERB coming to an end, many are seeking alternatives to make ends meet. Since the beginning of the pandemic, sites like Shopify have seen an explosion of interest from French speakers looking to set up their own ecommerce sites.

For Cyril Ortega, an ecommerce business expert and instructor who teaches French speakers how to set up an ecommerce site, 2020 has seen a significant increase in interest in his online courses. The courses, which are taught exclusively in French to students around the world, including Canada, Europe, the U.S, Middle East and Asia, offer step-by-step guidance as to how to set up a store, how to target and advertise to French audiences and how to properly select item which offer mass appeal. This month alone, Ortega is leading hundreds of students in Quebec and abroad through the process of understanding ecommerce and setting up a store.

“For French speakers looking for remote work or alternative means of employment online, it can be more challenging because of the language barrier. Most freelancing and remote work sites cater primarily to English buyers and seller. That’s what makes an ecommerce site ideal for French speakers. While the majority of ecommerce sites are in English with English descriptions and English targeted ads, it means that there is a huge opportunity for French language sites and niche French products online which are currently underserved. Ecommerce is an ideal outlet for French speakers looking to earn extra money or looking to start a new career. There is no need to travel outside of the province to find a new job, and no need to learn or improve second language skills in order to participate in the remote work economy.”

In France, the largest French language ecommerce market, online retail sales are predicted to increase from $66 billion Euros in 2019 to $77 billion Euros in 2020, a growth increase of more than 17%. At the same time, brick-and-mortar retailers are seeing double digit declines in sales. When it comes to the Canadian ecommerce markets, Quebecers have been slower to adopt ecommerce than English-speaking Canada. Ortega believes a lack of proper French language training is partially to blame.

“This year, the ecommerce site, Shopify, saw a 71% increase in the number of ecommerce stores created in Q2 alone,” explains Ortega. “There is huge demand around the world from entrepreneurs looking to either make a little money on the side or to quit a job they hate and start working for themselves. What we see consistently though, is that ecommerce in French and other languages lags behind. I am trying to change that by bringing solid, reputable instruction to students around the Francophonie. I love seeing students report back to me that their store is set up, running well and that they have quit their regular job to run their own online store. I’m proud to say that in the year and half since I started teaching, my students have made more than $4.5 million in sales on Shopify thanks to the information in the courses, and their own hard work.”
